What if...you give a mouse (explicit encouragement to steal) a cookie?
Anarchy for kids, googdocs for good, maps for cats, etc.
Hi!
This is not an essay about abortion. You’ve probably already read this or this or this or this. But maybe not this or this or this or this or this? What I mean to say is that I don’t have a unique take on any kind of path forward, and that’s the point. Reproductive justice activists have been fighting this fight for decades, and advances are not made with tears, buying t-shirts, scolding people about voting, etc. They’re made by people collectively finding their spot to plug in on a local level, and then holding that plug indefinitely.
ANYWAY. In the midst of being in a colossal shit mood, I went to an art book fair in hopes that looking at a bunch of weird art existing outside of the capital A-Art World would remind me that the future I yearn for is in fact very much still possible. And guess what? Big success!
Among other things, I got this incredible little book called Anarchy For Kids from Errant Press. When I say “got,” I mean “stole” because that was the only way to get it. The last page looks like this:
I’m in love with this little creature! They aren’t just working to make a bunch of money for the boss man — they’re (presumably) using their strengths to make something lovely for their fellow little creatures. Little creature is not linking and building. They are in a flow state for collective joy. How do I know this? Ummm, look at that focused toothy smile! The grindset is firmly OFF.
Speaking of which, tomorrow (Tuesday, June 28) at 6 PM CT/ 4 PM PT, I’ll be joining some pals at Distant to give a talk about our “unique approaches to making the most out of what Google Suite has to offer.”
My portion will be entirely about how using digital tools “poorly” can be a path to killing the gatekeeper in your head and making more silly little projects with and for your friends. I may or may not also be using this as a way to workshop a class I want to teach at Index Space. 😈
It’s free to attend and you can RSVP so you get a little reminder with the Zoom link HERE. It’ll also be recorded, so feel free to just respond to this like you would any other email and I’ll send you the link when it’s out.
Okay, that’s it for now. May your week be full of whatever recharges your sense of hope and humanity.
