I also loved Neon Gods and agree that it's both smutty and oddly vanilla considering how much literal potential there was for kinkier scenes. I also think about the world-building (and by that, I mean the utter lack thereof) in that series at least once a month!
I've only read the first two - a few of the others are languishing on my Kindle but I haven't felt compelled to pick them up, so I think we might be feeling the same way about them in general.
