What if…algorithm-free reco list, no. 5?
Meh-plus TV, a “seasonal” snack, some good bureaucracy, etc.
Hello!
Wanted to start by thanking everyone for being so nice to me the other day when I went long on my woes. It means a lot! <3
But anyway, here’s some recos. If you have stuff you like and want to share, feel free to drop it in the comments or just reply directly to this!
Silo (Apple TV)
Is this show “good?” I remain unconvinced. But I will pitch it to you as: “What if Snowpiercer (the FX show more than the movie) were also Antz? And then we threw a bootleg Westworld score on top for good measure?” If you don’t like Rashida Jones because she has the tonal range of a kazoo, you are in luck because the pilot cast is mostly gone by the second episode. Strap in, though, because her leading lady replacement, Rebecca Ferguson, went to the “Harry Styles in Don’t Worry Darling” School of American Accents. I mean, she’s hot, so it’s a net positive.
NetGalley
I feel like a lot of people don’t realize that you don’t have to be some #BookTok star to read ARCs (advance reader copies — free books given out to people to review months before publication). You just need an email address and a willingness to write lil’ reviews and post them. The high of getting books earlier than everyone else? Extremely worth having to interact with the Goodreads hell-interface.
S'mOREOs
Oreo has definitely done the whole s’mores thing before, but at least this time, they didn’t fumble the name. Very solid cookie, very solid amount of filling. These are “limited edition,” so get ‘em while you can.
The Ultimatum: Queer Love (Netflix)
If you love mess, watched all the other Lachey Cinematic Universe shows, and are ignoring this, that’s homophobic behavior! Sorry! It’s frustrating that they don’t put pronouns in the chyrons so we can talk shit without misgendering people, and it’s enraging that they didn’t pick a host who’s even a little bit prepared to handle a “sex and cheating are different for queer people” reunion chat, but overall, I endorse. It’s so much more interesting to watch the nuanced reasons people have for/against marriage that aren’t just “I’m a lady who wants to be a fairytale princess,” and I’m a man who is a man.”
The State of California’s Domestic Partnership Registration Process
If your financial/career life implodes, you too can pay $33, take a free trip to a Chase notary, and hop on your partner’s health insurance (unfortunately not free)! I’ve also learned a lot about California’s labor laws over the last month, and there’s some good shit in there! A great state.
